A monument in Indian classical literature, Ramayana has profound influence in Southeast Asian theatre.
Scripted by Dr Chua Soo Pong in 1988, Ramayana was presented in Teochew, Li Yuan, and Huangmei opera in Singapore. The Hokkien version was premiered in India in 2005 and Indonesia in 2006.
It begins with sage Vishvamitra bringing Pinces Rama and Lakshamana to the kingdom. Queen Kaiyeki requests King Dasharatha to crown her son.
Prince Rama and Princess Sita are forced into exile.
Stunned by Sita’s beauty, Ravana asks his brother Maricha to transform into a golden deer to lure Rama away.
Jatayu, Queen of birds and Hanuman, Monkey general met Prince Rama who was looking for the Princess. Can they save the Princess?
Performed in Teochew, Hokkien and Mandarin with English subtitles.
